The quick overview

The reality: Dubai's education system is almost entirely private for expats. Public schools are for Emiratis only. You'll choose from 200+ private schools across different curricula, quality levels, and price points.

Most popular curricula: British (60%+ of schools), American, IB (International Baccalaureate), and Indian (CBSE/ICSE). But you'll also find French, German, Japanese, and more.

Quality control: KHDA (Knowledge and Human Development Authority) inspects and rates every school annually. Ratings from Outstanding to Weak are public and reliable.

The catch: Good schools have waitlists. Apply early โ€” ideally 6-12 months before you need a spot. Premium schools fill up years in advance for popular year groups.

Other Curricula

Dubai also has French (Lycรฉe), German, Japanese, Pakistani, Filipino, Iranian, and other national curricula for specific communities.

How to choose

If returning to UK: British curriculum or IB (both recognized)

If returning to US: American curriculum or IB (strong university recognition)

If globally mobile: IB offers the most flexibility internationally

If budget-conscious: Indian curriculum typically more affordable

If uncertain: British is the safest bet โ€” most schools, most options, globally recognized

KHDA ratings explained

KHDA inspects every private school annually. Ratings are public and reliable โ€” use them as your starting point.

OutstandingHighest quality. Exceptional teaching, outcomes, and leadership. These schools have waitlists.
Very GoodHigh quality. Strong in most areas, with some features of outstanding schools.
GoodMeeting standards. Solid education with room for improvement in some areas.
AcceptableMinimum standards met. May have inconsistencies. Research carefully.
WeakBelow standards. Significant concerns. Generally avoid unless improving rapidly.
Pro tip: Check ratings at khda.gov.ae. Look at the detailed inspection report, not just the overall rating. Some schools excel in areas that matter most to you.

How to apply

The process is straightforward, but timing matters. Good schools fill up fast.

1
Research schools (6-12 months before)

Check KHDA ratings, visit schools, narrow down 3-5 options based on curriculum, location, fees, and availability.

2
Gather documents

Passport copies, birth certificate, vaccination records, previous school reports, Emirates ID (if available).

3
Submit applications

Apply to multiple schools โ€” waitlists are common. Pay application fees (AED 500-2,500 each).

4
Assessment & interview

Many schools assess children, especially for older year groups. Some interview parents too.

5
Accept offer & pay deposit

Secure your spot with a registration fee. Confirm start date and orientation.

Nurseries & early years

For children under 4, nurseries provide early education before formal schooling.

Age groups

Toddler
12-24 months
Pre-Nursery
2-3 years
FS1/KG1
3-4 years

Typical fees

AED 20,000-60,000/year depending on location and quality. Some offer part-time options.

What to look for

  • โ€ข KHDA licensed (required)
  • โ€ข Staff qualifications and ratios
  • โ€ข Outdoor play space
  • โ€ข EYFS curriculum implementation
  • โ€ข Transition programs to schools

Special educational needs (SEN)

Support for children with additional needs is improving but varies significantly between schools.

What's available

  • โ€ข Learning support units in mainstream schools
  • โ€ข Specialist SEN schools (e.g., Al Noor, Dubai Centre for Special Needs)
  • โ€ข Shadow teachers / teaching assistants
  • โ€ข Speech and language therapy
  • โ€ข Occupational therapy
Important: Not all schools are equipped for all needs. Be upfront about your child's requirements when applying. Some schools may require an Educational Psychologist assessment.

Common questions

There's no universal 'best' โ€” it depends on your plans. British is most common and globally recognized. American suits those returning to the US. IB offers flexibility for mobile families. Indian is academically rigorous and affordable. Choose based on where you might live next and your child's learning style.

For popular schools (Outstanding rated), apply 6-12 months ahead, or even earlier for FS1/Reception. Mid-tier schools may have spots with 2-3 months notice. Always have backup options โ€” waitlists are common.

Yes, most schools accept mid-year enrollments if they have space. January and April are common entry points. However, availability is limited โ€” popular schools often have no mid-year openings.

Generally yes. KHDA inspections are thorough and annual. However, a rating is a snapshot โ€” look at the detailed report and multiple years of data. A school improving from Good to Very Good may be a better choice than one stable at Very Good but plateauing.

Absolutely. If relocating with an employer, education allowance is standard for families. Push for realistic coverage โ€” premium school fees can exceed AED 80K per child. Some packages cap at AED 40-50K, which limits your options.

Typically: child's passport, birth certificate, parents' passports, Emirates ID (or visa copy), vaccination records, previous school reports and leaving certificate, photographs. Some schools require equivalency certificates for non-GCC/Western schooling.

Most schools offer bus services for an additional fee (AED 5,000-12,000/year). Routes are fixed, so check if your area is covered. Many parents prefer driving or using private drivers.

A-Levels and IB Diploma are well-recognized globally. For US universities, AP courses and SAT/ACT are important. Schools vary in their university counseling quality โ€” ask about destinations and support during your visit.
