Key fact: Dubai's education is regulated by KHDA (Knowledge and Human Development Authority), which inspects all private schools annually and publishes transparent ratings.

Public vs private schools

Understanding this distinction is crucial โ€” it affects which schools you can access.

Public Schools

  • โ€ข For UAE nationals only
  • โ€ข Arabic curriculum (Ministry of Education)
  • โ€ข Free for Emiratis
  • โ€ข Not available to expats
  • โ€ข Separate schools for boys/girls

Private Schools

  • โ€ข Open to all nationalities
  • โ€ข Multiple curricula available
  • โ€ข Fee-paying (varies widely)
  • โ€ข KHDA regulated and rated
  • โ€ข Mix of co-ed and single-sex

Bottom line: As an expat, you'll use private schools. The good news is you have enormous choice โ€” from budget-friendly to ultra-premium, across multiple international curricula.

KHDA ratings explained

KHDA is Dubai's education regulator. Their annual inspections provide valuable, transparent data on school quality.

Outstanding
Highest quality โ€” exceptional teaching, outcomes, and leadership
Very Good
High quality โ€” strong in most areas with some outstanding features
Good
Meeting standards โ€” solid education with room for improvement
Acceptable
Minimum standards met โ€” may have inconsistencies
Weak
Below standards โ€” significant concerns, generally avoid

How to use KHDA ratings

  • โ€ข Check ratings at khda.gov.ae before applying
  • โ€ข Read the full inspection report, not just the overall rating
  • โ€ข Look at trends โ€” is the school improving or declining?
  • โ€ข Remember ratings are a snapshot โ€” visit schools yourself
  • โ€ข Consider which areas matter most to you (teaching, facilities, etc.)

Age and grade placement

Different curricula use different terminology and age cutoffs.

Special educational needs (SEN)

Support for children with additional needs is improving in Dubai, though it varies significantly between schools.

What's available

  • โ€ข Learning support departments in mainstream schools
  • โ€ข Specialist SEN schools
  • โ€ข Shadow teachers / teaching assistants
  • โ€ข Speech, language, and occupational therapy
  • โ€ข Gifted and talented programs

What to look for

  • โ€ข Dedicated SEN coordinator (SENCO)
  • โ€ข Clear inclusion policy
  • โ€ข Individual Education Plans (IEPs)
  • โ€ข Staff training in additional needs
  • โ€ข Appropriate facilities and resources
Important: Be transparent about your child's needs when applying. Not all schools are equipped for all needs. Some may require an Educational Psychologist assessment and additional fees may apply.

Common questions

There's no universal 'best' โ€” it depends on your plans. British is most common in Dubai, American suits US-bound families, IB offers global flexibility, and Indian is affordable and rigorous. Consider where you might relocate next.

KHDA inspects all private schools annually and rates them Outstanding, Very Good, Good, Acceptable, or Weak. Ratings and full reports are public at khda.gov.ae.

Late August or early September, running until late June. The year is divided into three terms with breaks in December, March/April, and the long summer break July-August.

Yes, most schools accept mid-year enrollments if they have space. January (Term 2) and April (Term 3) are common entry points. Availability varies by school and year group.

Typically: child's passport, birth certificate, parents' passports, Emirates ID (or visa), vaccination records, previous school reports and leaving certificate, photographs. Some schools require equivalency certificates.

Start with KHDA ratings, but don't stop there. Visit the school, meet teachers, ask about outcomes (exam results, university placements), check class sizes, and talk to other parents if possible.
