In this guide
Dubai's education landscape
Dubai's education system is unique. With over 200 private schools serving a population that's 85% expatriate, you have more choice than almost anywhere else โ but also more complexity to navigate.
Public vs private schools
Understanding this distinction is crucial โ it affects which schools you can access.
Public Schools
- โข For UAE nationals only
- โข Arabic curriculum (Ministry of Education)
- โข Free for Emiratis
- โข Not available to expats
- โข Separate schools for boys/girls
Private Schools
- โข Open to all nationalities
- โข Multiple curricula available
- โข Fee-paying (varies widely)
- โข KHDA regulated and rated
- โข Mix of co-ed and single-sex
Bottom line: As an expat, you'll use private schools. The good news is you have enormous choice โ from budget-friendly to ultra-premium, across multiple international curricula.
Curricula available in Dubai
One of Dubai's strengths is curriculum diversity. Here's what's on offer.
British Curriculum
Most popular in Dubai (60%+ of schools). EYFS โ Key Stages โ GCSEs โ A-Levels. Familiar for UK families, widely recognized globally.
British schools guide โAmerican Curriculum

American schools guide โInternational Baccalaureate (IB)
PYP โ MYP โ IB Diploma. Inquiry-based, globally recognized. Growing in popularity. Excellent for internationally mobile families.
IB schools guide โIndian Curriculum (CBSE/ICSE)
Popular with the large Indian expat community. Academically rigorous. Generally more affordable than Western curricula.
Other Curricula

KHDA ratings explained
KHDA is Dubai's education regulator. Their annual inspections provide valuable, transparent data on school quality.
How to use KHDA ratings
- โข Check ratings at khda.gov.ae before applying
- โข Read the full inspection report, not just the overall rating
- โข Look at trends โ is the school improving or declining?
- โข Remember ratings are a snapshot โ visit schools yourself
- โข Consider which areas matter most to you (teaching, facilities, etc.)
Age and grade placement
Different curricula use different terminology and age cutoffs.
| Age | British | American | IB |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3-4 | FS1/Nursery | Pre-K | PYP |
| 4-5 | FS2/Reception | Kindergarten | PYP |
| 5-11 | Year 1-6 | Grade 1-5 | PYP |
| 11-14 | Year 7-9 | Grade 6-8 | MYP |
| 14-16 | Year 10-11 (GCSE) | Grade 9-10 | MYP |
| 16-18 | Year 12-13 (A-Level) | Grade 11-12 | DP |

Choosing the right curriculum

Consider: American curriculum or IB โ GPA and AP courses valued by US universities
Consider: IB โ Most flexible, recognized worldwide
Consider: Indian curriculum (CBSE/ICSE) โ Quality education at lower cost
Consider: British โ Most options in Dubai, globally recognized
Special educational needs (SEN)
Support for children with additional needs is improving in Dubai, though it varies significantly between schools.
What's available
- โข Learning support departments in mainstream schools
- โข Specialist SEN schools
- โข Shadow teachers / teaching assistants

KHDA inspects all private schools annually and rates them Outstanding, Very Good, Good, Acceptable, or Weak. Ratings and full reports are public at khda.gov.ae.
