IB Schools in Dubai: International Baccalaureate Guide
The complete guide to IB education in Dubai β PYP, MYP, Diploma Programme, and why globally mobile families often choose this path.
Why choose the International Baccalaureate?
The IB Diploma is accepted by universities in 150+ countries. If you might relocate again, IB offers the most flexibility.
Students learn how to learn. Critical thinking, research, and independent inquiry are central to the approach.
CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) ensures students develop beyond academics. The IB learner profile emphasizes character alongside knowledge.
The Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge prepare students for university-level research and critical analysis.
Consider carefully if: Your child needs more structure, struggles with self-directed learning, or you're on a tight budget (IB schools tend to be premium-priced).

IB Diploma vs A-Levels
Both are excellent qualifications. Here's how they compare.
| Aspect | IB Diploma | A-Levels |
|---|---|---|
| Subjects | 6 subjects required | 3-4 subjects (your choice) |
| Breadth vs Depth | Broader (all areas covered) | Deeper (specialize early) |
| Core requirements | TOK, Extended Essay, CAS | None (just subjects) |
| Workload | Generally heavier | Depends on subjects |
| Best for | Uncertain direction, global mobility | Clear subject focus, UK track |
Common questions
The IB is generally considered more demanding due to the breadth requirement (6 subjects plus core) and the time commitment of CAS. However, difficulty is subjective β some students thrive with IB's structure, others prefer A-Level's focused approach.
Both are equally accepted. UK universities provide IB point requirements alongside A-Level grades. Oxford and Cambridge accept IB with typical offers of 38-40 points with 6s and 7s at Higher Level.
PYP and MYP are designed to accept students at various points. Joining the Diploma Programme (Year 12) after other curricula is possible but requires adjustment. Schools assess readiness individually.
Students can receive IB certificates for individual subjects rather than the full diploma. Some students switch to A-Levels if the IB isn't working β schools usually accommodate this if done early enough.
US universities value the IB Diploma highly, especially the core components. Higher Level subjects can earn college credit. The IB's emphasis on breadth aligns well with US liberal arts philosophy.
IB schools require specially trained teachers, smaller class sizes for inquiry-based learning, extensive resources, and IB authorization fees. The pedagogy is more resource-intensive than traditional teaching.
