The reality of Dubai life

What's true: Dubai is safe, clean, modern, and tax-free. The standard of living is high, the infrastructure is excellent, and the international community is genuinely diverse. Most expats find they can save more money here than anywhere else.

What's also true: Housing is expensive. Summer is brutally hot. The population is transient β€” friends come and go. It can feel superficial if you don't find your tribe. And it's not "home" in the traditional sense.

The honest take: Dubai is excellent for certain life stages β€” building wealth, raising young families, advancing careers, experiencing something different. Most expats either love it and stay for years, or realize it's not for them within the first year.

Frequently asked questions

Dubai offers a high standard of living with modern infrastructure, excellent safety, and a diverse international community. Most expats work 8-9 hour days, enjoy evenings at restaurants or the beach, and spend weekends at brunches, malls, or outdoor activities. The lifestyle is comfortable but can be expensive, especially housing and socializing.

Yes, especially since most people are expats in the same situation. Work colleagues, sports clubs, hobby groups, and apps like Meetup and InterNations make it easy to connect. The challenge is that Dubai's population is transient β€” people come and go, so friendships require effort to maintain.

Housing is expensive (40-50% of most budgets). Dining out and entertainment add up quickly. However, groceries are reasonable, there's no income tax, and many employers provide housing allowances. Most expats find they can save more than back home despite the costs.

Beach clubs, Friday brunches, desert trips, restaurant hopping, gym/fitness, water sports, shopping, and socializing. October-April is perfect for outdoor activities. Summer drives people indoors to malls and air-conditioned venues. Many also travel frequently, taking advantage of Dubai's hub location.

Summer (June-September) regularly hits 40-48Β°C with high humidity. It's genuinely uncomfortable outdoors. Winter (November-March) is perfect: 20-30Β°C, sunny, and ideal for outdoor activities. Spring and fall are transitional with warm but manageable temperatures.

Extremely safe. Dubai has one of the lowest crime rates globally. Walking alone at night, even for women, is generally very safe. Petty crime is rare. This safety and security is consistently cited as one of the main reasons expats love living here.
