Surviving Summer

Summer is challenging but manageable. Here's how residents cope.

1
Embrace indoor living

Malls, cinemas, indoor sports become your world.

2
Early morning activities

Runners and swimmers start at 5-6am before the heat.

3
Plan summer travel

Many expats take extended holidays in July-August.

4
Remote parking

Park in shade or underground. Steering wheels burn hands.

5
Stay hydrated

Carry water everywhere. Dehydration happens fast.

6
Enjoy the perks

Great hotel deals, less traffic, quieter city.

When It Rains

Dubai gets an average of 10-15 rainy days per year, mostly in January-March. When it does rain:

  • Roads flood: Drainage isn't designed for heavy rain
  • Traffic chaos: Expect major delays and accidents
  • It's an event: People get excited — it's rare
  • Temperatures drop: Can feel cool (15-20°C)
  • Work continues: Rain days off are rare

Note: 2024 saw unusual flooding from cloud seeding experiments. This is not typical Dubai weather. Normal rain is light and clears quickly.

Common Questions

Peak summer (July-August) regularly hits 45-48°C with high humidity that makes it feel even hotter. It's genuinely uncomfortable to be outside for more than a few minutes. Even at night, temperatures stay around 30-35°C. AC is essential and runs 24/7.

October to April is ideal — pleasant temperatures (20-30°C), minimal rain, perfect for outdoor activities. November-March is peak season with the best weather. If moving, try to arrive in October-November to settle in during good weather.

Rarely. Average is about 10-15 rainy days per year, mostly January-March. When it does rain, the city isn't designed for it — expect flooded roads, traffic chaos, and occasional closures. It's a novelty when it happens.

Light, breathable clothing for outdoors. Layers for heavily air-conditioned indoors. Modest clothes for malls and public areas (shoulders and knees covered is appreciated). Good sunglasses and sunscreen year-round.

Significantly in summer. Humidity often exceeds 80%, making even short walks sweaty. Glasses fog up leaving AC. Cars need a few minutes to cool down. Most outdoor activities shift to early morning or are avoided entirely.
