Renewal Process

General steps for most visa renewals

1

Check Visa Expiry

Check your visa and Emirates ID expiry dates. Emirates ID often expires before visa.

Use the ICP app to check all your visa details anytime.

2

Verify Passport Validity

Ensure passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond the new visa period.

If passport expiring soon, renew it first at your embassy.

3

Gather Documents

Collect all required documents based on your visa type.

Get new passport photos taken - old ones won't be accepted.

4

Medical Test (if required)

Book and complete medical fitness test at DHA-approved center.

Not all renewals require new medical - check with your sponsor/free zone.

5

Submit Application

Submit through employer, free zone, GDRFA, or ICP based on visa type.

Keep application receipt - you'll need it if traveling during processing.

6

Pay Fees

Pay renewal fees online or at service center.

Keep payment confirmation as proof.

7

Emirates ID Renewal

Submit Emirates ID renewal (often combined with visa renewal).

New card arrives by courier in 1-2 weeks.

8

Visa Stamping

Get new visa stamped in passport (for some visa types).

Some visas are now digital-only and don't require physical stamp.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Learn from others' errors

Forgetting about Emirates ID

Consequence: Emirates ID often expires before visa. Expired EID can block services even with valid visa.

Prevention: Check both dates. Renew EID first if it expires sooner.

Passport too close to expiry

Consequence: Visa renewal rejected if passport has less than 6 months validity.

Prevention: Renew passport before visa if needed. Embassy renewal takes 2-4 weeks.

Waiting until grace period

Consequence: Can't travel easily during renewal process. Complications if delays occur.

Prevention: Start 30-60 days before expiry for comfortable margin.

Missing license renewal (freelance/business)

Consequence: Visa can't be renewed without active license. Gap in legal status.

Prevention: Set reminder 90 days before license expiry. License first, then visa.

Not updating employer/sponsor

Consequence: If you changed jobs and didn't transfer, old employer might not renew.

Prevention: Always complete visa transfer when changing employers.

Using old photos

Consequence: Application rejected. Photos must be recent (within 6 months).

Prevention: Get new photos taken specifically for renewal.

Overstay Penalties

If you miss the 30-day grace period and enter overstay status:

Days 1-30 Overstay

AED 100/day

Plus administrative fees

Days 31+ Overstay

AED 200/day

Escalating consequences

Extended Overstay

Detention Risk

Deportation + entry ban

If you've significantly overstayed: Don't go to immigration alone. Consult a PRO or immigration lawyer first to understand your options and potential amnesty programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ideally 30-60 days before expiry. This gives you buffer time for any complications. For freelance/business visas, start even earlier (60-90 days) since you need to renew your license first. Employment visa holders should remind their employer's PRO/HR at least 30 days before.

It's complicated. If you have a renewal application in process with a receipt, you can usually travel but may face questions on re-entry. Some companies provide a "renewal in progress" letter. Safest to complete renewal before any travel. If urgent travel needed, get written confirmation from your sponsor.

After the 30-day grace period, you'll accrue overstay fines of AED 100/day for the first 30 days, then AED 200/day after that. Extended overstay can lead to detention, deportation, and entry bans. If you've overstayed significantly, consult a PRO or immigration lawyer before going to any government office.

It depends on your visa type and how long since your last test. Employment visas usually require new medical for renewals. Golden Visa typically doesn't. Freelance visas vary by free zone. Virtual Working visa usually requires fresh medical. Your sponsor or free zone will confirm.

Yes! Renewal is a good time to switch visa types. For example, upgrade from employment to Golden Visa, or switch from freelance to investor. You'll cancel the current visa and apply for the new one. Plan carefully to avoid gaps in your legal status.

Legally, employers must renew before expiry. If they delay into grace period, the fines should be their responsibility. Document all communication. If they refuse or excessively delay, you can complain to MOHRE. In extreme cases, you may need to seek new employment and transfer visa.

Renew passport BEFORE visa renewal if it won't have 6+ months validity after the new visa period. Contact your embassy - most can renew passports in 2-4 weeks. Once you have the new passport, update your visa/Emirates ID records (usually done during visa renewal).

Limited options. Employment visa renewal usually requires you to be in UAE. Some free zone visas can be renewed remotely. If your visa expires while you're abroad, you may need to enter on a new visa (tourist or new work visa) rather than "renewing." Consult your sponsor before traveling near expiry.
