âš ī¸The Catch-22

Many things require Emirates ID, but getting Emirates ID requires a visa, and some visa processes require things that need Emirates ID. The solution: use temporary documents, digital versions, and patience. The system isn't perfectly sequential.

How to Get Emirates ID

Emirates ID is issued automatically as part of the residence visa process. The steps depend on your visa type.

For Employment Visa

Your employer's PRO typically handles everything:

  1. PRO submits your visa application to GDRFA
  2. You complete medical fitness test
  3. Medical results submitted to immigration
  4. Biometrics appointment scheduled (PRO or you attend)
  5. Biometrics taken (fingerprints, photo, signature)
  6. Emirates ID issued (digital first, then physical card)

For Freelance/Free Zone Visa

Similar process, but you or your setup agent coordinates:

  1. Free zone submits visa application
  2. You complete medical fitness test
  3. Book biometrics appointment via ICP website or AMER center
  4. Attend appointment with required documents
  5. Emirates ID issued

For Golden Visa

Process varies slightly by qualification route:

  1. Submit Golden Visa application via GDRFA
  2. Application approved in principle
  3. Complete medical (if required based on status)
  4. Biometrics appointment
  5. Emirates ID and 10-year visa stamp issued

The Biometrics Appointment

This is the main thing you personally need to attend. Here's what to know.

📍 Where

  • ICP Service Centers: Official Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security centers
  • AMER Centers: Government service centers (often faster)
  • Authorized Typing Centers: Private centers authorized to submit applications
  • Free Zone offices: Some free zones have in-house facilities

📄 What to Bring

  • Original passport
  • Copy of visa / entry permit
  • Medical fitness certificate (original)
  • Passport-size photos (white background, recent)
  • Application form (often prepared by PRO/typing center)
  • Payment for fees

⏱ī¸ What Happens

  • Queue and submit documents for verification
  • Fingerprints taken (all 10 fingers)
  • Photo taken (remove glasses, no smiling)
  • Digital signature captured
  • Receive receipt with tracking number

Total time: 15-45 minutes depending on queue. Appointment systems help, but walk-ins are often accepted.

After Biometrics: Getting Your ID

Digital Emirates ID (2-3 days)

Your digital ID appears in the ICP UAE app within 2-3 business days:

  1. Download "ICP UAE" app (official app, not third-party)
  2. Create account using your passport details
  3. Verify via OTP to registered phone number
  4. Your Emirates ID will appear under "My IDs"
  5. Can generate QR code for verification
✓Use Digital Immediately

Don't wait for the physical card. The digital version is legally valid everywhere. Banks, telecom, landlords — all accept it. Screenshot it or show it in-app. You can even use it at airport smart gates.

Physical Card (5-15 days)

The plastic card is mailed to your registered address or collected from designated location:

  • Delivery: Emirates Post delivers to your address (free)
  • Collection: Some can be picked up at AMER/ICP centers
  • Tracking: Use ICP app or website to track status

What's on the Card

  • Full name (English and Arabic)
  • Emirates ID number (15 digits: 784-YYYY-NNNNNNN-N)
  • Nationality
  • Date of birth
  • Gender
  • Expiry date
  • Photo
  • Chip with biometric data

Your ID number format: 784-2000-1234567-1
784 = UAE country code, 2000 = birth year, last digit = check digit.

Using Your Emirates ID

📱 UAE PASS

Once you have Emirates ID, set up UAE PASS — the single sign-on for all government services:

  • Download UAE PASS app
  • Register using Emirates ID
  • Verify identity (biometric or in-person)
  • Access 6,000+ government services with one login

đŸĨ Al Hosn (Health)

Your Emirates ID links to Al Hosn for health records:

  • COVID-19 vaccination records
  • PCR test results
  • Medical fitness test results
  • Some hospital records

✈ī¸ Airport Smart Gates

Use Emirates ID at DXB/DWC airport smart gates for faster immigration:

  • Register once at airport smart gate kiosk
  • Use Emirates ID instead of passport for UAE entry/exit
  • Much faster than regular queues

🛒 Age-Restricted Purchases

Emirates ID is required for alcohol purchases (licensed stores) and some age-restricted items. Keep it handy.

Renewal & Common Issues

Renewal

Emirates ID expires with your visa. When you renew your visa, a new Emirates ID is issued automatically:

  • Usually handled by employer/sponsor during visa renewal
  • May require new biometrics (every 2-3 renewals typically)
  • Cost: AED 100-170 (included in visa renewal fees usually)
  • Don't let your ID expire — banks and services may freeze

Lost or Damaged Card

If your physical card is lost or damaged:

  1. Your digital ID in ICP app still works
  2. Apply for replacement via ICP website or AMER center
  3. Cost: AED 300-370 for replacement
  4. New card delivered within 5-10 business days
  5. Old card number remains the same

Status Check

To check your Emirates ID status:

  • ICP UAE app: Shows application status and digital ID
  • ICP website: Status check with passport number
  • SMS: Some status updates sent to registered number
  • Emirates Post: Track delivery once shipped

Common Problems

❌ ID taking longer than 2 weeks

Contact your PRO or check ICP website. Sometimes documents need clarification. Your digital ID should still be available.

❌ Name spelled wrong

Must be corrected officially — contact ICP or AMER center. You'll need supporting documents (passport) showing correct spelling.

❌ Digital ID not appearing in app

Ensure you registered with correct passport details. Try logging out and back in. If still missing after 5 days post-biometrics, contact ICP directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

For some things, yes. But many UAE services (banks, housing, telecom) specifically require Emirates ID. Your passport proves identity; your Emirates ID proves UAE residence and links to UAE systems. You'll need both, but Emirates ID is used more frequently for daily life.

Use your digital Emirates ID from the ICP app — it appears 2-3 days after biometrics. Most banks accept it. If you're in the brief gap before digital ID is ready, some banks may accept your visa copy plus passport, but it depends on the bank.

Not necessarily. The digital version in ICP app is legally valid. However, some older systems or individuals may insist on the physical card. It's good to have it with you, but not strictly required for most situations.

Your Emirates ID is tied to your visa. If you change jobs, your old visa is cancelled and a new one issued by the new employer. This typically means a new Emirates ID application and new biometrics. Your ID number may change.

Yes. Every family member with a residence visa (spouse, children) gets their own Emirates ID. The process is the same: visa application → medical → biometrics → ID issued. Parents sponsoring children handle the process for them.

Within the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) countries, UAE residents can sometimes use Emirates ID for travel instead of passport. For other international travel, you need your passport. Emirates ID does speed up UAE airport immigration via smart gates.

Your residence visa is the legal permission to live in UAE, stamped in your passport. Emirates ID is the identity card issued to all residents, used for accessing services. You need the visa first, then Emirates ID is issued as part of that process. Both are essential.

Same as your residence visa: 1-3 years for standard visas, 5 years for some investor visas, 10 years for Golden Visa. When you renew your visa, a new Emirates ID is issued with the new expiry date.
